Copperopolis Shaft

A timbered two compartment shaft, that was near the Copper King Shaft. The shaft was 85ft. deep in November of 1882. Unexpectedly, water was struck at the 85ft. level and drifting was planned at the 80ft. level. The exact location of the shaft is unknown but was located somewhere near the Higgins mine. No further mention of the shaft exist, but in 1885 a summons was made for the owners of the Copperopolis Mining Company to appear in court to pay for $100 of work done on the property in 1884. The Copperopolis claim was later relocated as the Webster claim on which the later successful Higgins Mine was developed. By 1909, no signs of the Copperopolis shaft remained. It is likely that the dumps of the Higgins mine had covered the site
