42 Transfer Raise

Picture15_edited.jpg

42 transfer raise is a large four compartment located in 3 crosscut on the 3rd level Southwestmine near the Shaft. This is the transfer raise that can be seen on the Copper Queen Mine tour. It is a raw (untimbered) bell shaped raise. The bottom of the raise is equipped with four Copper Queen style chute doors. The first section of the raise goes up  two hundred feet were it intercepts the 5th level Southwest mine completely bypassing the 4th level.  On the 5th level there is a grizzly made of 40 lb rail to catch oversized boulders before they went into the raise. At this point a small beanhole raise intercepts 42 raise just above and to one side of the grizzly. This raise goes 25ft into a stope that continues to 6th level southwest. The ore from this stope was dropped directly into the beanhole and landed on the 5th level grizzly. There was no chute door on beanhole raise to control flow of material. The rock would then continue on to 3rd level.  42 raise could hold up to 3000 tons of rock (40,000 cubic feet). It is doubtful if the raise was ever filled to capacity, due it potentially clogging from compaction.

Operation of a Copper Queen chute is fairly easy.   A 2 ft. to 3 Ft. piece of 2” pipe (cheater bar)   is slipped over the chute handle. The pipe is pulled downward to open and upward to close chute door. This design gives the operator a great deal of control on how much muck is flowing from the chute. The curve in the door makes it easier to shut.   When operating a chute it is best to stand off the ground and stand on a block or dynamite box. Some chute setups will have a place for the miner to work on about 5 ft. off the ground. This allows the motor swamper to be above the car so they will not get buried if the chute runs.  C & A chutes are of a similar design. The operation of C&A chutes is the same with the chute handles being slightly different.
